Governor Alex Otti of Abia State has provided clarity on the decision to relocate the Umuahia campus of Abia State University (ABSU) to its primary campus in Uturu, Isuikwuato Local Government Area.
According to the governor, the move aims to strengthen the university’s learning environment and foster a unified academic community by bringing students and faculty together on a single campus.
Speaking at his monthly media briefing titled “Governor Alex Otti Speaks to Abians,” Otti highlighted that consolidating ABSU’s resources in one location will enhance collaborative opportunities across departments and improve access to essential facilities, including libraries and research laboratories.
He reassured the public that the government is taking proactive steps to address the logistical challenges that may arise from the relocation.
“Our administration is committed to making this transition as smooth as possible,” Otti stated, outlining plans to provide additional accommodation for students and faculty, improve electricity access, and ensure that reliable water resources are in place.
The governor shared that new dormitories and lecture halls are under construction and that plans are underway to improve infrastructure throughout the campus to accommodate the increased student population.
To address water supply issues, the government has entered a partnership with the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) to rehabilitate essential water schemes in the state, including those in Ariaria, Abia North, and Ubakala.
The governor noted that these renovations are essential to ensuring a sustainable water supply for the campus and surrounding areas.
Governor Otti also addressed concerns regarding legal education, mentioning that new, multi-functional courtrooms are being built to support ABSU’s law students in practical training.
These facilities will be equipped with modern resources, enhancing the quality of legal education offered at the university.
