NUC Upgrades Pharmacy, Physiotherapy, and Optometry to Doctoral Programmes.

The National Universities Commission (NUC) has announced a major reform in medical-related programmes across Nigerian universities.

Pharmacy, Physiotherapy, and Optometry have been upgraded from bachelor’s degree programmes to doctoral status, marking a significant milestone in higher education in Nigeria.

According to a statement issued in Abuja by Mrs Franca Elochi Chukwuonwo, Acting Director of Public Affairs for the NUC, the upgrade aims to align these courses with global best practices.

The new structure is designed to provide advanced clinical training, expand foundational courses, and equip students with specialised skills to meet international standards.

As part of the upgrade, the duration of these programmes has been extended from five to six years.

This additional year will accommodate advanced coursework and intensive clinical training, ensuring that graduates are better prepared for professional practice and can compete globally in their respective fields.
